Kolot Kehilla

UW Prof. Jordan Ellenberg kicks off our 5778 Kolot Kehilla Sunday morning speaker series featuring the voices of our community (kolot kehilla). Jordan presents "Geometry, the Constitution and the right to vote: the math of congressional redistricting."

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in October in Gill v. Whitford, in which a three-judge panel found that Wisconsin Assembly district map was an unconstitutional abridgment of the right to vote.  Is it?  It’s both a legal and a math question.  I’ll talk about the new mathematical tools that both allow legislators to thumb the scale in their party’s favor, and allow judges and activists to detect and measure that interference.

A light breakfast will be served before the talk. Please consider a $5 donation to offset the costs of this Beth Israel Center Adult Education program.
