Kabbalat Shabbat is one of the most beautiful times of the week. Every Friday night, as we transition from our weeks filled with work, school, and community activities, we have the opportunity to come together to welcome the peace of Shabbat. The Beth Israel Center strategic plan, developed by the Board of Directors in 2010, prioritizes strengthening our congregational Kabbalat Shabbat observance, which has been challenged in recent years by inconsistency in gathering a weekly minyan for the service. To assure that we have a vibrant minyan every Friday evening, the Ritual Committee has developed a plan of enhanced Kabbalat Shabbat programming and of designating different constituencies to support our Friday night minyanim on a rotating basis. This plan, which has been endorsed by the Board, assigns specific dates for groups of committee members, Talmud Torah parents, MOUSY mice, and others to join with fellow congregants to participate in our scheduled Kabbalat Shabbat service. In addition to supporting that week’s minyan, this plan provides a wonderful opportunity for people within those groups to come together after the service for a Shabbat gathering if they wish. The list of scheduled dates is below. The Kabbalat Shabbat liturgy, which was created in the sixteenth century by Kabbalist mystics, is uniquely spiritually uplifting. Our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat minyan at Beth Israel assures that we are honoring Shabbat, warmly greeting visitors to our community, and offering an opportunity for those in mourning or who have yahrzeit to say Kaddish. In addition to this plan to support our minyan on specific weeks by designating congregant participation, over the next year we will continue to have regular Friday night dinner gatherings and will also initiate a Shira Hadasha minyan with added emphasis on the stirring melodies of the service. We hope you will make every effort to attend on the week specified for your group, as well as on other weeks.
