Keeping Kosher in Madison

The baked goods at Lane's Bakery on Park Street, the Greenbush Bakery on Regent Street (specializing in donuts), and Bagels Forever on University Ave. are supervised for kashrut by the Rabbi. Madison has no kosher butcher. Members obtain kosher meat from two main sources: by ordering from the Kosher Meat Club in Milwaukee which ships its meet by bus, and through periodic orders and shipments from a Philadelphia butcher which are arranged by a group of Beth Israel members. For further information on ordering from Philadelphia, contact Andrea Kivolowitz via e-mail at andreak@itis.com.

Sentry Foods at Hilldale now offers a wide array of kosher foods.  They have:

  • a small freezer set up for frozen kosher products, like frozen pizza (found in the frozen food section of the store)
  • a selection of frozen poultry products (found in the frozen meats section of the store) as well as non-frozen poultry (found in the poultry section)
  • a refrigerated section with kosher cheeses (!), hummos, etc.
  • Also look for the Krazy for Kosher signs throughout the store, providing a quick and easy way to choose your kosher dry foods.
